The IEC 62056 communication protocol is supported via the use of an external gateway. The gateway is used to establish the communication with the IEC 62056 slave using DNP3 Master on the simulator side and DNP3 Slave on the gateway side. One or multiple IEC 62056 slaves (which are typically smart meters) can report analog and digital measurements to the simulator through the gateway. The gateway will receive data from the IEC 62046 slave(s) and retransmit this data to the simulator using DNP3. The equipment used to perform the protocol conversion is the gateway. It comes with a configuration software that is used to configure protocols involved in the communication chain.

To create an IEC 62056 Master connection, a gateway and the IEC 62056 Master driver (OP3232) are required.
Since the Gateway connects to the Real-Time Simulator via Ethernet interface (RJ45), if additional interfaces are required in the simulator then a physical Ethernet port add-on module will need to be added (see OP3821 and I350T4V2BLK below).
