This device allows current to flow only in forward direction (from negative/anode to positive/cathode port). Also, it is capable to block voltage only in forward direction. Its states depends on gate control signal (controlled commutation) and on the conditions imposed by the external circuit: the transition from conduction to blocking state only occurs when the current is null.

thyristor is a solid-state semiconductor device with four layers of alternating P- and N-type materials. It acts exclusively as a bistable switch, conducting when the gate receives a current trigger and continuing to conduct until the voltage across the device is reversed biased, or until the voltage is removed (by some other means).
