Transient Stability - 1. Introduction

This simulator was designed to foster the user interaction and present the versatility of the exercises that can be performed.

The basic power grid, used in most power systems training, is studied and analyzed in two modes: time domain and phasor.

The grid is comprised of an infinite bus connected to a synchronous generator with a power transformer and four buses. The synchronous generator can also be equipped with rotor damper windings.

A Power System Stabilizer (PSS) of power oscillations may be activated, depending on exercise conditions.

Three exercises are provided in phasor mode, which allows users to better understand the concepts explained in the regular classroom:

  • Transient stability analysis after a three phase short-circuit on bus 1.

  • Transient stability analysis, taking account the damper windings on synchronous generator

  • Transient stability analysis after a three phase short-circuit on bus 3.

These three exercises are then repeated in time-domain mode, which allows users to understand the performance of these simulation methods using either phasor or time-domain modes.
Procedures for these exercises are explained in Part 4.
