Interconnection

With OPAL-RT’s real-time simulator solutions, users can learn, study, and test power electronics control as well as fully exploit Festo’s renewable energy 2 kW DFIG laboratory kit.

  • Easily connects an OPAL-RT’s real-time simulator to academic laboratory equipment

  • Provides high-end rapid control prototyping (RCP) capabilities in undergraduate and graduate labs

  • Complements Festo DFIG offer with a Simulink-based controller option

  • Easily builds medium power (2 kW) laboratory for teaching or research

The OP8219 Inverters/Decoders Interface Panel interfaces the following Festo (LabVolt) equipment in the 2 kW Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) Research System with the OPAL-RT simulator.

  1. The Festo (LabVolt) 4 quadrant dynamometer (2 kW) encoder module.

  2. The Festo (LabVolt) IGBT Chopper/Inverter modules (8857-1, 8837-B0).

It is designed to be installed on a standard 19″ rack and uses standard DB37 connectors to connect with the OPAL-RT simulator.
The DB9 Encoder IN connectors in the front are compatible with the encoder module in the Festo (LabVolt) 2 kW dynamometer (8505-A), and the DB9 Inverter OUT connectors in the front are compatible with the DB9 terminals on the Festo (LabVolt) IGBT/Chopper module (8857-1).
It requires to be powered by a 12 V DC power supply unit and has three different connectors options. The user needs to supply the 12 V power in only one of the power supply connectors. Since the inverter DB37 connector supplies 5 V power to the simulator Digital Out card, the user should not connect any power supply to the simulator Digital Out connector.

Hardware

The complete system contains the following standard hardware. Cabling instructions are provided for this configuration only.

  • OPAL-RT OP4512 real-time simulator including:

    • OPAL-RT OP5360 32 channels digital output module, 5 V to 30 V

    • OPAL-RT OP5342 16 channels analog input module, 2MS/s, 16 bits, ±20 V

    • OPAL-RT OP5353 32 channels digital input module, 4.5 V to 50 V

    • OPAL-RT OP5330 16 channels analog output module, 1 MS/s, 16 bits, 35mA, ±16 V or 8 channels at 2 MS/s

  • OPAL-RT OP8219 Inverters/Decoders Interface Panel

  • OPAL-RT OP8662-8-600 High Voltage and Current Probe, 15 A, 600 V

  • Festo (LabVolt) IGBT chopper/inverter (8857)

  • Festo (LabVolt) power supply (8821)

  • Festo (LabVolt) line inductors

  • Festo (LabVolt) resistive load

  • Festo (LabVolt) three-phase wound-rotor induction motor

  • Festo (LabVolt) A-quad dynamo (8540)

  • Festo (LabVolt) DFIG machine (8505)

  • Festo (LabVolt) Motor module (8506)
