OPAL-RT supports IEC 61850 interfaces to connect to various IEDs via the publishing and subscribing of GOOSE and Sampled Values messages. Using a standard network interface card, this protocol can be easily and rapidly integrated into any simulation model. With the proper user configuration, a driver is initialized on the target simulator at the start of the simulation and begins publishing and subscribing to other IEDs. The IEC 61850 driver makes use of asynchronous threads on dedicated cores in order to achieve high performance. The GOOSE configuration can be easily imported from Configured IED Description (CID) files of the various equipment under test. Messages support native complex data objects and attributes with digital and analog values.

IEC 61850 is a standard for the design of electrical substation automation systems, which defines fast communication of events (GOOSE) or data set samples (Sampled Values) through Ethernet frames. Standard naming and object modeling are based on a Substation Configuration Language (SCL), describing data exchange at device and substation levels. IEC 61850-8-1 Generic Object-Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) is a control model mechanism in which any format of data (status, value) is grouped into a data set that must be sent and received within a time period of 3 milliseconds for the most restrictive protection applications.

Product Selection Guide

IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE requires software license OP3251, which comes with 50 data points (visit this page more information on data points). If additional data points are required, then they may be added via product OP3050

Since real-time simulators come with one available Ethernet port, if additional physical Ethernet ports are required on the real-time simulator, these can be added via kit.
Note that for applications requiring many Ethernet ports, the OP4510 and OP4512 simulators are not recommended.

IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE can be added to real-time simulators without the need for additional hardware
A time synchronization module to maintain high-precision sync and time-stamping may be required depending on the application. For more information on precision timing, please this page: Precision Timing Synchronization.
