Control Smart Inverter
Overview
The Smart Inverter Library is a HYPERSIM control and protection library developed based on the requirements of IEEE Std. 1547‑2018 for the interconnection and interoperability of distributed energy resources (DERs). The library provides modular and configurable control architectures for both grid‑following (GFL) and grid‑forming (GFM) power electronic converters, enabling a wide range of real‑time simulation, prototyping, and testing applications.
The grid following control library includes current controllers, power controllers, protection functions, and certain configurable grid support functions, such as Constant Power Factor (CPF), Volt-Var, and Droop. The grid forming control library includes a secondary control approach, two types of inner control approaches and three types of primary control approaches. The Smart Inverter Control library allows users to quickly perform Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) of smart inverter controllers with their Real-Time Simulator. When performing RCP, the simulator acts as the controller and is interfaced with a real power converter.
This library also includes a growing set of control and plant‑level blocks aligned with the functional structure of WECC generic renewable energy system models. These blocks are intended to reproduce, in an EMT and real‑time simulation context, the control behaviors commonly represented by WECC generic models used in bulk power system dynamics studies.
The Smart Inverter Library also allows for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests involving real control and protection system hardware to be enriched with smart inverters represented digitally within the Real-Time Simulation. Interfacing between real-time digital smart inverter model and real devices can be supported via communication protocols, such as Modbus TCP and IEC 61850 GOOSE.
