Configure and Use the IPMI Interface

The use of IPMI is not essential for the migration of an OP4510 real-time simulator from Red Hat Linux to OPAL-RTLinux 3.5.4.
It’s another way to connect to the target from a remote computer on the same network and work like if you were working directly on the target itself.

About IPMI

IPMI stands for Intelligent Platform Management Interface. It is a set of computer interface specifications for an autonomous computer subsystem that provides management and monitoring capabilities independently of the host system’s CPU, firmware (BIOS or UEFI) and operating system. For example, IPMI provides a way to manage a computer that may be powered off or otherwise unresponsive by using a network connection to the hardware rather than to an operating system or login shell.

Configure the IPMI Interface on the OP4510 V2 (X11SSM-F Motherboard)

This procedure is done only once, unless you lose your BIOS configuration.

Connect:

  • A keyboard (port #3 or #4) and a screen (port #9) in the back of the OP4510.

  • An Ethernet cable to the dedicated IPMI LAN (port #2) and to your local network socket.

Boot or reboot the system and set up the BIOS by pressing the DEL key at the Supermicro screen.

Using the direction keys (keyboard arrows):

  1. Go to the IPMI tab.

  2. Go to the BMC Network Configuration line and press Enter.

Set Update IPMI LAN Configuration to Yes and set the desired IP configuration.

Depending on your situation, you may want to input a Static or DHCP configuration.
Check with your IT department if you are not sure which one to use.
In this example, we will leave it at DHCP.

Take note of the IP address at line Station IP Address.

  • In the example below, the IP address is 10.64.108.157.
Your IPMI IP address will likely be different.

Press the Escape key to exit this screen and return to the main BIOS page.

Using the keyboard arrow keys and the Enter key:

  1. Select Save & Exit.

  2. Select Save Changes and Reset.

  3. Select Yes.

Remote Login with Web Interface using IPMI

Open a new tab or a new window in your web browser.

Enter the IPMI IP address you took note of previously.

  • In this example, it’s 10.64.108.157.
Your IPMI IP address will likely be different.

A security warning message similar to this one (it depends on your web browser) will probably show.

  • It’s because we do not use a certificate of security on our target. It’s normal and secure.

    • Click on "Advanced..." (the button name differs depending on the browser).

    • Click Open website (the command differs depending on the browser) to proceed to the login screen.

Login with your username and password or with the default credentials shown below.

  • Default username and password for the OP4510 V2 motherboard model X11SSM-F:

    • Username: ADMIN

    • Password: ADMIN

After login, go to the Remote Control menu and select iKVM/HTML5.

Click on iKVM/HTML5 button.

A window opens and displays the actual video output of the target.
