OP1400 PHIL Test Bench Series Operation

Page Content

Preparing the PHIL Test Setup

The OP1400 Series test benches are a flexible PHIL solution that allow multiple setups and use cases to be tested. They are delivered with a set of banana cables to allow the user to easily switch among the available configurations.

Below are examples of configurations that can be realized with the OP1400 Series test benches. To configure the test bench, the user must access the inside of the cabinet through the rear door and rewire the OP8110 amplifiers to the OP1460/1480 accordingly.

Hazardous voltage levels may be present inside the cabinet. Do not open the cabinet door without ensuring that all safety guidelines described in Manipulation of the test setup are followed. Failure to do so could expose the user to risks of electric shocks.

Power-up and Operation of the PHIL Test Bench

The following procedure must be executed to properly Power-up a completely unpowered OP14xx test bench and to operate it using OP8110 GUI blocks in the Simulink Console (refer to OP1400 PHIL Test Bench Series Interfacing through RT-LAB for more details on the RT-LAB interfaces and to the RT-LAB Documentation for information on how to use RT-LAB):

1

Make sure that the control equipment is properly supplied (120V/220V inlets must be plugged in, internal power bars must be turned on).

Control equipment gets powered-on. Facing the Testbench, the following should turn ON:

  • OPAL-RT logo at the top of the cabinet

  • Orange LED inside ON/OFF push button of the OP8110 amplifiers

  • +12V_AUX LEDs on OP1490s

  • Power meters on the OP1470 units (OP1420 models only)

2

Turn on the OPAL-RT simulator.
Refer to the System Description Document (White Binder).

Simulator turns on.

3

Install the SFP cable between the OP8110s (use rightmost SFP port) and the simulator.

4

Turn on the OP8110 amplifier(s) using their respective ON/OFF push buttons.

The following LEDs on the OP8110 amplifier(s) turn ON:

  • Green LED inside ON/OFF push button

  • ST (status) LED

  • CFG (config) LED

For details, refer to "OP8110 Controls and Interfaces" page.

5

Make sure that the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) door at the back of the Cabinet is closed with the switched turn OFF.

To access inside the PDU, refer to the Safety Instructions.

6

Since the Cabinet needs to be closed anytime the PDU is turned ON, make sure that all electrical connections required by the desired configuration are done at the back of the OP1460 or OP1480 and front of OP1450.

Nota Bene: For the OP1460 panel, make sure that the Internal/External selector switches — for some newer versions of the OP1460 they are marked Front/Rear, where Front corresponds to External and Rear to Internal — are set correctly.

Connections done.

7

Close all Cabinet doors, two side doors and the rear door.

To access inside the Cabinet, refer to the Safety Instructions.

8

Turn the main supply (3 phase power source) ON.

No trip.
The main supply reaches the input switch of the PDU (SW1).

9

Turn on the input switch of the PDU (SW1).

The main supply now reaches the OP1490 E-STOP.

10

Facing the Testbench, make sure the E-STOP (emergency stop) circuit breaker on the OP1490 is not activated (pressed). If it's activated, rotate it clockwise to deactivate it.

+24V_E-STOP LED is lit on OP1490, 24V Supply LED is lit on the OP1460/1480.

The main supply now reaches the OP1490 contactor switch.

11

Press the Start button on the OP1490 to enable the supply to the DC power supply(ies)

The light between the Start and Stop buttons on the OP1490 turns ON.

The main supply now reaches the DC power supply(ies).

12

Turn on the DC power supply(ies) using their respective ON/OFF knobs.

The display on the DC power supply turns ON.

13

Configure the DC power supplies as described in DC Power supplies - Functional overview.

VSET = 500 appears on the DC power supply(ies') display(s).

14a

At the front of the cabinet, make sure all Disconnect switches and Start/Stop contactor switches lights of the OP1460 or OP1480 are OFF.

Make sure that all electrical connections required by the desired configuration are done.

14b

It is recommended to use a voltage tester to make sure any device which needs to be connected or disconnected doesn't have any voltage across its terminals before doing any manipulation.

In this manner, we can ensure that we are doing de-energized work and prevent bodily harm or damage to the equipment.

The voltage tester should indicate 0 or confirm the expected voltage:

15

Turn on the Disconnect switch(es) for the DER(s) using the front interface.

16

Turn on the Start/Stop contactor switch for the DER(s) using the front interface.

17

Load your test model in the simulator using RT-LAB.

Model loaded successfully in simulator.

18

Start the execution of the test model in RT-LAB.

Measurements from the OP8110(s) should appear in the Simulink Console Scope(s). Some residual voltage may be present if no voltage is applied.

19

Enable the DC power supplies' output using the Trigger "ON/OFF" button.

Displays on the DC Power supplies should indicate 500 V is present with approximately 0 A of current.

20

Enable the DC Bus precharge on the OP8110 amplifiers through the OP8110 GUI (Simulink Console).

A light relay clicking sound coming from the OP8110(s) should be heard.

The DC power supply(ies) should indicate on its (their) display(s) a small current consumption that eventually falls back to zero.

After a couple of seconds, the OP8110 GUI should indicate "DC BUS ON!!".

21

Enable the relevant outputs of the OP8110 amplifiers through the OP8110 GUI (Simulink Console).

A light relay clicking sound coming from the OP8110s should be heard, the OP8110 GUI in the Simulink Console should indicate "ON" next to the relevant outputs, measurements from the OP8110s should show that output voltage is being generated.

For OP1420 models: the power meters for the relevant OP1460 inputs should indicate that voltage is present if AC voltage is being generated.

22

Depending on the selected reference mode, increase the RMS setpoint.

In the Simulink Console, the voltage measurement(s) from the OP8110(s) should match the setpoint after a couple of seconds. Current measurements should fluctuate accordingly with the load

23

Dynamically switch ON or OFF DERs using the Start/Stop buttons on the OP1460/1480's front panel.

Alternatively, on OP1420 models, use the simulator's digital outputs to switch ON or OFF the DERs.

The DER light (between Start and Stop buttons) should light up when DER is switched ON, the current measurements from the OP8110s should fluctuate accordingly with the loads.

For OP1420 models: the power meters for the relevant OP1460 outputs should indicate that current and power is being consumed or generated (assuming AC voltage is used)

--

If you see a “FAULT!!”, then click on “RESET ALL”

Now, check if the DC bus is connected well (polarity/value) and turned on. Check if the output is not short circuited, etc. These are some common errors that we have seen.

Repeat the previous steps again.

24

To Power-down the Testbench, execute this procedure in reverse order (disabling functions instead of enabling them).

Make sure to disable the DC link in the OP8110 GUI before turning off the DC Power Supply(ies).

N/A

Please refer to the Troubleshooting section of this manual if unexpected results are obtained.

Unplugging the banana cables while the test bench is running may cause electrical arcing which itself may cause injuries such as burns. The user should always turn the relevant DER outputs OFF before unplugging the associated banana cables.

User should ensure to always bring down the 500VDC of the OP8110s before turning off the test bench's power bars or unplugging the 12V supplies from the amplifiers.
Failure to do could result in irreversible damage to the OP8110 units.
