Understanding the Panel

When starting the demo, the panel in figure 6 appears first with the default settings.

Figure 6: Start-Up Panel of the Photovoltaic Generation System Laboratory

The panel is to be operated as follows:

  • In the top left corner, under Operation Modes, the student can select (via the switch button) to operate the PVGS either as MPPT or curtailment mode.
  • In the middle left corner, under Setpoints, the student can change the control parameters, which are summarized in table 1.

Control Parameters

Table 1: Control Parameters of the PVGS

After setting the control parameters, the students can observe the waveforms displayed in six scopes.
More details about the displayed waveforms are given in table 2.

On scope localization, the indices used will be like those of matrix elements.
Hence, the first under PV Array Measurements, located in the upper left corner (first row, first column) is denoted Scope11, while the second scope under PV Array Measurements in the upper right corner (first row, second column) is Scope12.
By the same token, the four scopes under System Measurements are denoted Scope21, Scope22, Scope31, and Scope32.

Scope

Content of Scopes & Displayed Waveforms

Scope11

PV voltage VPV  measured at the PV cell.

Scope12

PV current IPV  measured at the PV cell.

Scope21

Voltage Va and current Ia measured between the three-phase inverter and the transformer (see figure 7 below).

Scope22

DC link voltage Vdc measured at the DC link (see figure 7 below).

Scope31

Active power reference Pref and active power of the PVGS.

Scope32

Reactive power reference Qref and reactive power of the PVGS.

Help Tab

When clicking on the “Help Contents” tab, the panel in figure 8 is displayed.
In this panel, the student can see live displays of RMS currents and voltages, and power flow at different parts of the PVGS.
The student can validate the simulation results by checking that the power flow is balanced.
