BESS - Panels

Understanding the Panel

When starting the demo, the panel in figure 3 appears first with the default settings.

Figure 3: Start-Up Panel of the Battery Energy Storage System Laboratory

The panel is to be operated as follows:

  • In the top left corner, under Operation Modes, the student can select (via the switch button) to operate the BESS either as islanded or grid connected mode.
  • Also, under Operation Modes, the student can set the bus of the BESS as “PV” or “PQ” mode.
In “PV” mode, the active power (P) and the voltage are controlled, while in “PQ” mode, both active and reactive power are controlled.
  • In the middle left corner, under Setpoints, the student can change the control parameters, which are summarized in table 1.

Control Parameters

Default Value

Interval of Variation

Active Power Reference Pref (p.u.)

0

[-1; 1]

Reactive Power Reference Qref (p.u.)

0

[-1; 1]

Voltage Reference Vref (p.u.)

1

[0.95; 1.05]

Table 1: Control Parameters of the BESS

After setting the control parameters, the students can observe the waveforms displayed in six scopes.
More details about the displayed waveforms are given in table 2.

For identification purposes, the three scopes under Battery Measurements are denoted Scope1, Scope2, and Scope3.
For the scopes under System Measurements, the indices will be like those of matrix elements.
The scope in the bottom right corner, under System Measurements, is denoted as Scope22.
By the same token, the other three scopes under System Measurements are denoted Scope11, Scope12, and Scope21.

Scope

Scope12

Voltage magnitude of Va  and grid frequency

Scope21

Active power reference Pref and active power of the BESS

Scope22

Reactive power reference Qref and reactive power of the BESS

Help Tab

When clicking on the “Help Contents” tab, the panel in figure 5 is displayed.
In this panel, the student can see live displays of RMS currents and voltages, and power flow at different parts of the BESS.
The student can validate the simulation results by checking that the power flow is balanced.
Additionally, the base power and voltage values for p.u. computation are given in the “Help Contents” tab.
