OP7000V2 OP7170 FPGA Board

The FPGA board of the OP7000V2 chassis, the OP7170, comes in two versions: The OP7170-1 assembly is used for the Primary mode (installed in the central slots of the chassis) and the OP7170_2 for the Secondary mode (installed in the odd-numbered slots of the chassis).


This assembly is the main intelligence of the OP7000V2 system and serves as the main communication interface between the real-time simulator, the I/O boards installed in the chassis, and the optional secondary OP7170-2 cards.

It occupies the three front slots of the chassis (see OP7000V2 Front Interface) and consists of one FPGA card (P/N 126-0597), and an I/O mezzanine add-on (P/N 126-0326).

The FPGA card is powered with the Kintex-7 410T, which drives the 256 I/O lines of the chassis at 2.5V, and controls the PCIe and the 4 SFP ports.

The card connects to the chassis' mid-plane via three rear connectors (J1, J3, J10):

J1 connects the PCIe x4 lanes and the high-speed links to and from the secondary OP7170_2 cards
J3connects the I/O lines for the slots 13 and 14.
J10connects the I/O lines for the slots 9 to 12, and other signals such as synchronization signals

In total J3 and J10 connect 96 of the I/O lines with  the mid-plane. The other 160 I/O lines are routed to the I/O mezzanine add-on via two connectors (J4, J5) located on the bottom side of the FPGA card.

The I/O mezzanine add-on connects also to the mid-plane and routes these 160 I/O lines to the left slots of the chassis (slots 1 to 8) and the right-most slots (15 and 16).

The front plate of the assembly provides status LEDs and connectors, as described in page OP7000V2 Front Interface, section A.

This assembly of the OP7170 card is used for multi-FPGA simulation when the simulation requires more FPGA resources than are available in one card, or when the type of application demands to distribute the simulation over several cards.

The card occupies two consecutive slots of the chassis and thus can be installed only in the odd-numbered slots (1,3,5,7,9,11,13 and 15),

In this configuration, the FPGA card is used primarily to distribute FPGA resources and does not control the 256 I/O lines of the chassis. It can, however, monitor the I/O lines of a digital input card installed in its corresponding slot in the back of the chassis. 

The chassis' mid-plane can support a fully-connected network of one OP7170-1 card and up to eight OP7170-2 cards, meaning that each of the OP7170 cards has one dedicated high-speed link with each of the other OP7170 cards present in the chassis.
