Description

Implements two-port or grounded Surge Arrester, also called Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), for use with the SSN iterative solver.

The blocks must be connected to the rest of the SSN circuit with X-port type NIB.

The non-linear characteristic of the MOV is described piecewise linear segments using an unlimited number of voltage-current points.

Parameters

Voltage points (V): the MOV characteristic voltage break points in Volts. Must contain the 0 voltage points.

Current points (V): the MOV characteristic current break points in Amperes. Must contain the 0 current point. The number of current points must equal the number of voltage points.

Either 1 or 2 PM connection points are available depending on the model.

Examples

The ‘ARTEMiS SSN iterative model (iMOV and iSWITCH)’ section contains an example of iterative MOV (or iMOV) called SSN_iMOV_power_surgnetwork.mdl.

The above example is well described in [1]. The iMOV can also be used in complex power systems like MOV-protected MMC-based HVDC systems [2].

 SSN_SynchronousMachineFieldTerminal_withNeutral.mdl is another example with SM model and a non-linear resistor model, which is used to discharge the field current to 0 gradually after fault detection. The non-linear resistor uses this iMOV model.
